1881-O VAM-1H 070320

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set at what is considered a normal position (Normal Date). The first 8 contains a spike at the inside top left of the upper loop. Marker: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Short die gouges are present on the Eagle's Left and Right Wings. Marker: None.

NOTE: While this Morgan has been certified by ANACS as a VAM-1H, I believe it is instead a VAM-40. Additionally, it appears that the VAM-1H and VAM-40 are duplicates.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • There are a number of beveled areas present on the Obverse of this coin. The presence of beveled Fields is a sign that a mint worker had to repair areas of the Obverse Die that was damaged either by a clash event and/or significant Die cracking that required repair action. Those dark masses seen on the Obverse are beveled Fields.
  • A crack is seen traveling from the Field above Liberty's Nose, through the tip of the Nose, and back into the Field below Liberty's Nose. In this specimen, the crack loses its structural integrity below the Nose, but again regains its integrity as it proceeds through Liberty's Neck and travels through Liberty's lower hair. Another crack is seen traveling from the front part of the hair above Liberty's brow, through the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY, the Wheat Leaves, the Phrygian Cap, and ending at the the left side of the Cap Fold. An additional crack begins in the Field above the Cap and travels through the Fold ending at the back portion of the Cap before reaching the Field.
  • The clash event produced a single Reverse Clash Line that exits the top edge of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed), travels into the Field, and terminates at the n of the first word of the Reverse Motto, In. This line was created by the clashing of Liberty's Neck Line.
  • The clash event left a mark between the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed) and Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2. This feature is sometimes called a Bat Wing feature and is caused by the clashing of the lower third portion of the Phrygian Cap (Cap Vee region).
  • The clash event also produced marks on the right side of Clusters #1 and #2 of the Left Laurel Wreath. These marks were created by the clashing of the profile of Liberty's Nose-Chin region.

SPECIAL NOTE: A feature that has been described as a "Snail" due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars that were minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can be viewed in the Section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Other features of interest are also found in that section as well.
