Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

1882-O VAM-38B I3R7 AW020218 [ Kimpton 12 VAMs ]

Obverse: III-24. Date is set in the Normal position. 8 and 2 are doubled. Die crack between the lower loops of the 8's. First 8 has a die chip outside between the left side of the loops.
  • Entire obverse has tiny rust pitting dots.
  • There is a radial die crack between the 2 and RS1 from the denticles to Liberty's hair; field is slightly displaced.
  • Clashing of the reverse second t of trust and part of the eagles wing below the t can be seen in the hairvee across from RS2.
  • Partial incuse clash first t of trust between hair locks to right of designer’s initial M.
  • Very strong double and triple clash marks at the cap vee and rear of cap of reverse RW1 and RW2.
  • Weak clash of partial center bars of D of DOLLAR from reverse below I of PLURIBUS.
  • Long die crack from the field in front of the U in UNUM across the top of the cap, into the wheat leaves and stalks terminating at the top of the L in LIBERTY.
  • Minor clashing at the top of the cap vee of part of RW4.
  • Clashing on Liberty's nose, lips and chin of reverse LW1 and LW2.
  • Double wing clash line at Liberty's jawline with a faint arc of left edge of G of God.
  • Die crack from bustpoint to left side of LS1 and between LS1 - LS4. Weak die crack between the tops of RS4 - RS6.
Reverse: C3a. Mintmark is set slightly high and centered.
  • Clash marks of the cotton bolls to the left of the eagles left leg.
  • Multiple neck clash from Liberty at the top of the eagles right wing below and into the G of God.
  • Multiple clash marks of Liberty's hair behind the eagles head.
  • Die crack from the right side of the d in God running thru the we trust of the motto and terminating at the top of the eagles left wing.
  • Clash of designer’s initial M from obverse showing above W of We.
  • Multiple Liberty's cap vee and hair clashes at RW1.
  • Clash of Liberty's chin, lips, nose and nostril from LW1 down the field ending at the right side of RW3.
  • Clash of Liberty's eye just above the olive branch leaf cluster.
  • Die crack from the wreath bow thru RW5 ending in the field. Die crack thru RW4.
  • Die crack thru LW2 ending in the field. Die crack from top of LW1 to underside of eagles right wing.
  • Large die crack with several breaks from LW5 diagonally thru the N of ONE and ending at the denticles below the O of ONE.
  • Die crack from the denticles below the A of DOLLAR running diagonally up thru the AR, into/thru RW3 and RW2.
  • Weak die crack from star to the tops of U and N of UNITED.
  • Die crack from right top of T across the tops or ED, tip of eagles right wing and terminating in the denticles above the first S of STATES. Some breaks.
  • Die crack across the top of STATES.
  • Die crack from the denticles abvoe the second S of STATES to the top of OF, eagles left wing tip, terminating in the denticles above the first A of AMERICA.
  • Die crack from the denticles above the first A of AMERICA to/thru MER. Weak crack between the feet of AM.
Comments: ALOT going on with this coin. Planchet striations on obverse and reverse. TONS of cracks and breaks. VAM-38B is a true champion of Crack City.
