1898-O VNC-13A 052820

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set much further right than is normal (A Very Near Date). The second 8 of the Date is tripled at the upper right inside of the lower loop. Additionally, that digit is also doubled, perhaps tripled, at the upper right inside of the upper loop. This is a multiple clashed Obverse Die with a double partially incused last t in the last word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. In addition, the edge of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as Viewed) is seen exiting the edge of the lower hair to the right of the double t feature. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set high in an upright position. Markers: None.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all the attributes associated with the VAM-13A. While this certainly appears to be a VAM-13A, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-13A by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. I has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-13A by the VSS.
  • Three Obverse Clash Lines can be seen exiting at the junction of Liberty's Jaw and Neck and were the product of three clash events that occurred while this Obverse Die was in service. They were created by the clashing of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed).
  • A counter clash appears along Liberty's Neck Line.
  • Clash marks can be seen in the Field just off Liberty's Nose to Chin region. These clash marks were produced by two out of the three clash events that occurred while this Obverse Die was in service. They were created by the clashing of Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2.
  • Clash marks are present at the top of the Phrygian Cap. They were produced by at least two out of the three clash events that occurred while this Obverse Die was in service. They were created by the clashing of Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #4 and #5.
  • Die gouge can be seen exiting the bottom right side of the Left Cotton Boll. This feature might prove to be a Die Marker.
  • A clash mark is seen in the Field at the back of the Phrygian Cap opposite UM of the last word of the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM. This mark was created by the clashing of Right Laurel Wreath Cluster #2.
  • It appears that Liberty's Ear is slightly doubled at the inside right Ear wall.
  • Three Reverse Clash Lines can be seen exiting the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed) and traveling up between the words In and God of the Reverse Motto. These clash lines were created by the clashing of Lady Liberty's Neck Line.
  • Significant Die file line activity is present in the Eagle's Wing-Neck Gap.
  • Multiple clash marks are seen in the Field between the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed) and Clusters #1 and #2 of the Left Laurel Wreath. This feature is generally referred to as a Bat-Wing Feature. The Bat-Wing Feature is created by the clashing of the edge of the lower third portion of the Phrygian Cap (Cap Vee Region).
  • Two clash lines can be seen traveling in the Field between Cluster #2 and Cluster #4 of the Left Laurel Wreath. They were the product of two clash events; and were created by the clashing of the edge of Liberty's Nose.
  • Multiple clash marks are present exiting the right side of Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 AND #2. These clash marks were the product of three clash events; and were created by the clashing of Liberty's Nose to Chin region.

NOTE:
  • A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years. Photographs of a possible Obverse Die Marker are found in the Special Interest Section as well.
