1904-O VAM-35B 012318

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Date is set in the Normal position. Very slight doubling is seen on Liberty's Nose, Lips, and Chin with counter clashing at Lips. A counter clash can be seen in the Field just below the Ribbon of the Phrygian Cap, as well. An Obverse clash line is seen exiting Liberty's Neck Line with a partially incused n of the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust seen exiting about halfway down the Neck Line. A partially incused s in the last word of the Reverse Motto is found to the right of the Hair Vee. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Reverse Legend is doubled toward the Rim as are some Cluster leaves of the Left Laurel Wreath. The Mint Mark is set in a normal upright position. Marker: Two gouges can be seen at the top right of the A in DOLLAR.

NOTE: Later mintage coins will show an area of die pitting in the Field above the Arrow Heads.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-35B and has been certified as a VAM-35B by ANACS.
  • This specimen contains a number of die cracks on both the Obverse and Reverse sides.
  • It appears that this coin's doubling of the Reverse Legend seems most pronounced in the word STATES.
  • This coin does not possess the die pitting in the Field above the Arrow Heads that is present on coins of later mintage.

SPECIAL NOTE: The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P VAMs. This doubling was created at the time the Master Hub was prepared and was transferred to the working dies. While the A is doubled, the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, does not appear to be doubled in the same manner as the A. Comparative photographs can be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The 1903-P VAM research conducted by Silver Dye Photography has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. The 1904-O VAM-1B1, VAM-13, and VAM-31 also show the same doubling of the A. While the VAM-1B1 shows no doubling of the Reverse Motto, VAM-13 and VAM-31 do. Further review of 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.

Comment: These gouges are the primary die marker for the VAM-35B. Comment: While this is not specifically noted as a die marker, information contained in VAMWorld's VAM-35A Page notes that this feature is found on the VAM-35, VAM-35A, and VAM-35B. Therefore, I felt it appropriate to place this feature in the Die Markers Section.

Comment: Partial incused In of the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. The Yellow and White Arrow is pointing to the I and the Black and White Arrow is pointing to the n. The Obverse Clash Line is seen exiting Liberty's Neck Line and traveling into the Field. That line was created by the clashing of the Eagle's Right Wing. Comment: Incused In as seen at a different angle. The visibility of the Clash Line and the letter transfers shows that a significant clash event had occurred.

rtm 1904 O 012318l.jpg rtm 1904 O 012318m.jpg
Comment: Doubling of STATES, the second word of the Reverse Legend. The doubling of STATES is much more pronounced than what is seen on UNITED. Comment: The Reverse Clash Line is seen exiting the Eagle's Right Wing and traveling up to the n. That line was created by the clashing of Liberty's Neck Line.
