1878-P VAM-80B 010220

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Date digits 878 are doubled. The first 8 at the left inside of the upper loop. The 7 at top right of shaft. The second 8 at the left and bottom inside of upper loop; and bottom inside of lower loop. The last four letters of the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY, are doubled; as are the Wheat Leaves, Grains, Cotton Bolls and Cotton Leaves. Most of the letters of the Obverse Motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and several of the Right and Left Stars are doubled as well. Shallow over polishing of the Ear; leaving little inner Ear design remaining. Marker: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Due to Die over polishing, the last three leaves of the Olive Branch are no longer connected to the Branch. Long Die polishing lines are seen in the Reverse Fields, with most located in the lower Fields. A small die chip is present at the top of the Eagle's Right Wing and next to the body (Left Wing as viewed). Die breaks are present at the top of the left and right side of the T in the first word of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and left of N in UNITED. Later mintage VAM-80Bs have Die cracks around the circumference of the coin; producing Field displacement between the outer edge of the Letters and the Denticles. Marker: None.

NOTES:
  • Included in the Attributes mentioned above are those applicable to the VAM-80 and 80A.
  • As has been noted, later mintages of this Variety show Field displacement around the circumference of the coin. When I examined my specimen in hand, I noticed a difference between the appearance of the Field from the outer edge of the Letters to the Denticles compared to the appearance of the Field from the outer edge of the Letters to the center of the coin. As I understand it, seeing such a difference in Field appearance indicates an area in which Field displacement has occurred. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to photograph this possible displaced Field; or at least capture the displacement to my satisfaction.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-80B and has been certified as VAM-80B by the ANACS. In addition, this coin possesses all of the attributes present on the VAM-80 and 80A.
  • A Die chip is present on Liberty's cheek.
  • The Eyelid shows significant doubling.
  • A disconnected Nostril has developed. The disconnect is no where near as extensive as seen on "Missing Nostril" Varieties, such as the 1878-P VAM-41B.
  • Die file line activity can be seen in all of the letters of LIBERTY; and the letters LIB show lack of structural definition. These features are due to over polishing.
  • Broken R in the second word of the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM.
  • Die wear has significantly impacted the design structure of the Eagle's talons and Tail Feathers; as well as the Wreath Bow.
  • Reverse Die cracks and breaks are present around the entire circumference of the coin.

Bulletted features 2 through 6 can be viewed in the Section entiled Photographs of Special Interest.

Photographs of the Reverse cracks and breaks can be viewed in the Section entitled Reverse Die Cracks and Breaks.
