1888-P VAM-12A 100520

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set higher than normal (a High Date). A partially incused n of the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, can be see along Liberty's Neck Line. The Ear is doubled at the inside bottom of the Ear cavity and at the lower outside of the of the Ear Lobe, in particular at the tip. Markers: A thick diagonal Die file line is seen in the cavity of the hair gap next to the Small Bear Claw. That Bear Claw is located below the Phrygian cap.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: All of the letters of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, are doubled rimward. The first Word of the Reverse Motto, We, is doubled; as are some of the Leaves of the Right Laural Wreath, the ends of Tail Feathers #5, #6, and #7, and some of the Leaves of the Olive Branch. Tripling can be seen on some of the Leaves of the Left Laurel Wreath. Markers: None.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin shows all of the attributes associated with the VAM-12A and has been certified as a VAM-12A by the ANACS.
  • An Obverse Clash Line is seen exiting Liberty's Neck Line. This line was created by the clashing of the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing, Left Wing as viewed. I can't tell if two clash events produced this apparent single clash line. However, the incused n that is exiting Liberty's Neck Line appears to be doubled. This suggests that the single Obverse Clash Line is actually a double Obverse Clash Line and, therefore, the product of two separate clash events.
  • There is evidence that a clash event left marks between Liberty's Nose and Chin. Because the marks are very faint, this would suggest that this VAM-12A specimen is of a later mintage. The clash marks of an early mintage VAM-12A would be much sharper. These marks were created by the clashing of the leaves of Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2.
  • It's interesting that the Reverse Die shows evidence that three clash events had occurred during the time it was in service. The closest clash lines are those that head up to the G in the second word of the Reverse Motto, God. However, they would not have created the doubling of the incused n found on the Obverse. An incused G of God would occupy that location instead.
  • Three Reverse Clash Lines can be seen exiting the Eagle's Right Wing, Left Wing as viewed. One ends at the bottom of the n in the first word of the Reverse Motto, In, and the other two appear to combine and end on the bottom left portion of the second word of the Reverse Motto, God. These lines were created by the clashing of Liberty's Neck Line.
  • The two lines seen in the Field to the right of Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #2 and #3 were the product of the clashing of Liberty's Nose profile. Two separate clash events produced these lines.
  • The R in the last word of the Demonination, Dollar is doubled rimward as is the Right Star.

NOTE:
  • A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years. Other interesting features may be viewed at the Section as well.
