1889-P VNC-15 061219

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is doubled at digits 889. The first 8 is doubled at the tip inside of lower loop. The second is doubled at top inside of upper loop. The 9 is doubled at top inside of upper loop and at the right inside of lower loop. The Ear is doubled at the right inside and at the bottom of the Ear Lobe. Markers: Die scratch located at the back of the Phrygian Cap Fold near the first U in the last word of the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: There is some doubling of the lower edge of the Arrow Feathers and the left Arrow Shafts. Markers: None.

NOTE: A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature, as well as other notable features, can be viewed in the section entiled Photographs of Special Interest.

SPECIAL NOTE: VW's VAM-15 Page notes that an Obverse Die Marker appears on the Phrygian Cap Fold near the "left U". However, the Page does not contain a photograph of that Die Marker. In my view, the language contained in the VAM-15 regarding the location of the Die Marker can lead to confusion. At any rate, I was confused. I have taken two photographs in the area where this Die Marker should appear. One close-up shot shows the top right portion of Liberty's Head and the Phrygian Cap. The other is a shot of the Cap Fold region. The first photograph shows two Die scatches; one in the Cap Fold Void and another at the back of the Cap Fold. It is my understanding that the Obverse Die Marker is the Die scratch located at the edge of the Cap Fold. Please see the photographs in the section entitled Die Markers.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-15. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-15, my Page Heading notes this coin as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-15 by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. It has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-15 by VSS.
  • In addition to the doubling of the Ear noted in OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES section above, the Ear also appears to be doubled at the inside left as well. This is consistent with the doubling found on the Ear of the VAM-30. The VAM-15 Ear is noted as being an "Evil Mimic" of the VAM-30 Ear.
  • The Date is set in the traditional normal position (Normal Date).
  • An Obverse Clash Line can be seen exiting Liberty's Jaw just above the junction of the Jaw and Neckline. However, I see no evidence that the clash event produced letter transfers.
  • The clash event did leave marks between Liberty's Nose and Chin and in the Field behind the bottom third portion of the Phrygian Cap (Cap Vee area).
  • A Reverse Clash Line can be seen exiting the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed). The line appears to be traveling in the direction of the space between the first and second words of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. However, it does not appear that the Line extends to the letters of the Motto.
  • The upper interior portion of the G in God is filled.
  • A Die crack is seen exiting the second Denticle above the tip of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed), runs above the letters STAT of the second word of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and terminates at the Denticle just above the top right corner of the T (as viewed).
  • Both Right and Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2 show the effect of the clash event.
  • In addition to the doubling of the Arrow Feathers and the left Arrow Shafts noted in the REVERSE ATTRIBUTES section, the right portion of the Arrow Shafts also appear to be slightly doubled as well.
