Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

Obverse: III2-1
  • Dense polish lines throughout the lower hair curls, in the LIBERTY, and in the cotton bolls/stems.
  • Distinct diagonal polish line bisecting the R of LIBERTY.
  • Weak clash at Liberty's neck of the top of the eagle's right wing. No letter transfer.
Reverse: C3a.
  • Mint mark is set upright and slightly left. Two thick diagonal polish lines at the top/bottom inside of the mint mark opening.
  • Dense polish lines in the wreath bow, upper/lower tail feathers, eagle's left leg triangle void, and in the eagle's wing-neck gap.
  • Polish lines between the wreath bow and RW5.
  • Buffed reverse with outlines and distorted 'waves'/beveling in the field around several of the raised devices.
  • Double offset die clash marks of LIBERTY's neck below In of IGWT.
  • Raised designer's initial M from obverse showing above d in God.
  • Double cap vee clash at the inside of RW1. No corresponding clashing at the cap vee.
  • Distorted area at the tip of the eagles right wing tip.

Comment. May be an earlier die state as there is no distored area at the tip of the right wing. Also, the degree of distortion around the devices is not nearly as intense as on Coin #1. Regardless, the designer initial clash above the d in God is clearly visible.
