Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

1886-P VAM-1C I4R4 AW102017 HOT 50 and WOW! VAM

Obverse: III2-1.
  • Date set at Normal left.
  • Two faint die clash marks show at lips and eye front.
  • Heavy polish marks at LIBERTY.
  • Horizontal polish marks at the inside lower ear.
Reverse: C3a.
  • Unusual cap vee clash marks next to top of right wreath.
  • Top set of cap vee clashes shows three closely grouped clash marks. Lower group shows three clash marks with fairly wide separation on early die state while later die states only show two outer clash vee marks.
  • Clash marks of the cotton blossoms just above the arrow heads.
  • Clashing of Liberty's hair at the lower part of eagle's neck.
  • Clash of Liberty's neck at the top of the right wing below the In.
  • Clashing of Liberty's lips, nostril and nose bridge are evident along top inside of the left wreath.
  • Two clash marks end of the olive branch which appear to be part of Liberty's eye .
  • Feed finger gouges at the top of the left wing.
