1904-O VNC-1B3 042219
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The date is set at normal position with a closed 9. Counter clashing can be seen at Liberty's Lips, with doubling at the lower lip.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is a Medium O that is set upright in a centered postion. While pitting is seen in and around the
OL of the second word of the Denomination,
ONE DOLLAR, the amount of pitting is less than what is seen on the VAM-1B1 and VAM-1B2. Pitting is also found below and in the lower feathers of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed). A Die file line crosses the
A in the second word of the Reverse Legend,
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Die file line action can be seen on the Eagle's Wings, Body, and the Tail Feathers. The gouge that is located at the Eagle's Left Wing on the VAM-1B1 and VAM-1B2 is no longer visible on the VAM-1B3, nor is the counter clashed leaf tip that is located on the right side of Laurel Wreath Cluster #2. Die polishing removed those features.
Markers: None.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-1B3. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-1B3, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-1B3 by PCGS, ANACS, NGC, nor has it been confirmed as a VAM-1B3 by VSS. However, the ICG has noted this coin as a VAM-1B3. Because I've had little experience with that Third Party Grading service, I believe it appropriate to retain this coin's status as a VNC. It does appear, however, ICG correctly identified this Morgan as being the VAM-1B3.
- The Obverse shows signs of a single clash event. A clash line can be seen exiting the juncture of Liberty's Jaw and Neck; and, the Field off the bottom third portion of the Phrygian Cap contains clash marks.
- While VAM-1B1 and VAM-1B2 show significant Die file line action in and around the Bow, the VAM-1B3 shows significantly less Die file line action, especially in the cavity of the Bow.
- While the Mint Mark positioning of the VAM-1B1 is noted as being set upright and centered, this specimen's Mint Mark appears to be set a bit to the right.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. While the VAM-1B3 shows a doubling of the A, the Reverse Motto is not similarly doubled. Images of these Hub doubled features can be viewed in the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.
