1900-O VNC-13A 050819
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set slightly to the left of what is considered normally positioned and is, therefore, noted as Near Date. Date digits 19-0 are doubled. The 1 is doubled under the crossbar, the 9 is doubled at the top of the inside loop and at the bottom right outside, and the 0 is significantly doubled at the bottom. A partially incused
n of the first word of the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust is seen in the Field just off Liberty's Neck Line. A partially incused
t in the last word of the Reverse Motto is seen in the Hair Vee.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set to the right of center and is titled noticeably to the right.
Markers: None.
NOTES:
- This Variety does not show Hub doubling of the A in DOLLAR or the letters of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, that so many Morgan Silver Dollars minted from 1900 through 1904 show. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P Varieties show Hub doubling of the A and that this unique Hub doubling appears on many early Morgan Silver Dollars minted in the early 1900s. Further review of the 1900 through 1904 Varieties will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature, as well as other notable features, can be viewed in the section entiled Photographs of Special Interest.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-13A. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-13A, my Page Heading notes this coin as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-13A by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. It has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-13A by VSS.
- Heavy Die file line action is seen around the Wheat Kernels.
- A thin die crack begins at the Denticle above the B in the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM, runs through the B, the Wheat Kernels, and crosses the L in the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY , the hair and ends on the Forehead. Whether this crack is present on all VAM-13As is unknown to me.
- A double Obverse clash line is seen at the joint of Liberty's Jaw and Neck. The effects of the clash event can be seen at Liberty's Nose to Chin profile and in the Field off the bottom third portion of the Phrygian Cap (Cap Vee area).
