Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

1897-P VAM-6A I2R3 AW102417 Top 100

Obverse: III2-6.
  • Date set at the Normal left position. MTP says Near, but it's not.
  • Two heavy horizontal polish lines in Liberty's hair to the left center of lower cap.
  • Curved thread-like die impression at ear lobe bottom.
Reverse: C3b.
  • Heavy horizontal polish lines in and to the right of the wreath bow.
  • Extreme pitting to left below the eagle's tail feathers and in LW5.
  • Distinct horizontal polish line at the top of the eagle's right leg triangle void.
  • Die crack from the field to the left of the O in ONE thru the left star and right side as viewed of the U in UNITED ending in the denticles above the UN.
  • Die crack from LW1 thru the right wing tip and first S of STATES.
  • Weak die crack from the denticles above the M in AMERICA moving across the top of the ERICA.
  • Die crack from the denticles below the O in DOLLAR into the bottom of LLA.
  • Die crack from the bottom of the R in DOLLAR to the denticles below the right star.
  • Doubling on some of the leaves in the right wreath.
  • Small tick mark at the top of the eagle's right wing below the n of In. No clash event.
Comments:. The eagles left wing has several diagonal die scratches shown. Not sure if these marks represent a die marker or not. On the obverse on Liberty's cap ribbon behind the ear, there are similar die scratch marks as seen in VAM-6.
