1900-O VNC-35A RTM 091216
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin. |
OBVERSE FEATURES: The Date is doubled at the inside top of 900 and at the outside top of the last 0. Die cracks run from the right side of the first Denticle to the left of the Bust Point, under 19 and into 00 with a slight displaced Field breaks on Morgans of later mintage. A single clash event left a partial incused
n of the first word in the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, along Liberty's Neck Line. This VAM comes in a double clashed version, which contains a weakened incused
n. The Ear is doubled at the inside right wall.
Marker: Two raised dots appear at the hairline above digits 00.
REVERSE FEATURES: The Mint Mark is set high.
Markers: None.
A
Revision was issued on February 21, 2017. The Revision stated that: "Band of several parallel polishing lines from top right of D over to rim above N in UNITED on some specimens". For clarification purposes, those bands of parallel polishing lines (die file lines) are seen radiating from the interior of the
E in
UNITED and travelling into the Rim above the
D.
SPECIAL NOTE: As mentioned above, the
E of
UNITED shows lines radiating from the interior of the
E and into the Rim above
D. What is interesting is that these lines do not appear on the raised portion of the
E. Therefore, the lines were the product of die polishing. I examined 36 archived non-attributed VAM-35As (single and double clashed) and did not see that feature on any of those coins; nor did I see that feature on any of the hundreds of archived 1900-O Morgans that I reviewed. Consequently, I think it highly likely that the band of lines was a short-term die condition.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes associated with the VAM-35A. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-35A, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS; nor has it been confirmed as a VAM-35A by the VSS.
- A gouge-like feature is seen in the bottom right serif of the L in the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY, and at the left end of the top bar of the I in the Obverse Motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM.
- There appears to be a counter clash line running from the bottom right part of Liberty's nose to the outermost part of her upper lip.
- The Mint Mark appears to be tilted right. If so, it should be noted in the REVERSE FEATURES Section.
- A single Reverse clash line (created by Lady Liberty's Neck Line) runs from the top edge of the Eagle's Right Wing to the bottom of the right side of the n in In. There appears to be a single counter clash line located just to the left side of the Right Wing clash line.
- A die crack runs from the Rim above the right side of the M, through the letters ERI of AMERICA and disappears in the Field between the the remaining letters I and C.
- A die crack runs from the O in ONE to the top of the Left Star and continues along the top of the letters UNITE.
- Both Right and Left Wreath Clusters #1 and #2 show the results of the clash event.
