1883-O VAM-4(A) I3R4 TF868724: Doubled 1, Left 8, and 3. Metal Below Date. Repunched Mint Mark. Double Clashed.

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression.
Obverse: Attributes: Doubled 1, left 8, and 3. Metal below date. Markers: Vertical scratch in front of lower eyelid.
Reverse: Attributes: Repunched mint mark. Markers: Gouges along upper leaves of fifth left wreath cluster. Gouge across 3rd from the top wing feather of left wing. A pair of horizontal scratches at base of the 9th from the top left wing feather. Double clashed cap V.
Comments: The 8724 coin is a double clashed stage of VAM-4(A). A clashed n and M may have survived being polished away by a repair window. Beveling of the field at the cap v, cap top, and nose indicates die repair.

The lower inside wall of the ear is doubled. Beveling at the cap V, cap top, and profile indicates that this die had a previous life. A planchet defect may account for the striations at the chin, neck. and lower right stars. Possibly a double clashed n along the neckline. The initial punch is more centered than the final mint mark. Possibly a clashed designer initial M above d of God.
